She’s the notoriously upbeat talk show host that is also proudly gay, but in a new candid interview Ellen DeGeneres has admitted that she wasn’t always so happy and comfortable in herself.

Speaking with Out, the 58-year-old comedian confesses that she hit ‘rock bottom’ after coming out in 1997 on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

‘I was the punchline of lots of jokes,’ she tells. ‘I laughed at some, but I realised there’s somebody on the other side of them. It’s cruel.

‘I’ve never liked mean comedy, but that became even more important to me after I was the brunt of it.’

Shortly after she came out to the world, her sitcom Ellen was cancelled, and the star struggled with self-doubt.

‘I wasn’t sure if I was going to work again,’ Ellen admits. ‘And, although I was out, I was still trying to alter myself – not dressing the way I wanted to dress or wearing my hair the way I wanted to.’

Thankfully, we all know that isn’t where it ended for the successful TV host who is now worth millions and happily married to wife Portia de Rossi.

We like to think that Ellen followed the advice of her Finding Nemo character, Dory – ‘Just keep swimming!’
