Professional golfer Tiger Woods has been arrested in Jupiter, Florida for allegedly driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol over the Memorial Day long weekend in America.

According to TMZ, the 41-year-old was pulled over by police after they spotted a 2015 Mercedes driving “erratically, all over the road” at 3am in the morning.

Tiger has issued a statement apologising for the events and sharing his side of the story.

“I understand the severity of what I did and I take full responsibility for my actions. I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved,” Woods told People.

“What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications. I didn’t realise the mix of medications had affected me so strongly.”

“I would like to apologise with all my heart to my family, friends and the fans. I expect more from myself too. I will do everything in my power to ensure this never happens again. I fully cooperated with law enforcement, and I would like to personally thank the representatives of the Jupiter Police Department and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office for their professionalism.”

After stopping his car for the authorities, sources tell TMZ Woods, who lives in Jupiter, wreaked of alcohol and quickly turned “arrogant” refusing to have his blood alcohol levels measured by a breathalyser.

In Florida, refusing to do so results in an immediate arrest and license suspension.

The father-of-two was taken into custody and charged at the Palm Beach County Jail before being released at around 10:50am local time.

Tiger’s mugshot was snapped by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’ following his arrest.

In his now-viral mugshot, which was quickly turned into thousands of memes online, the disgraced golfer looks bleary-eyed and defeated.

As news of his arrest broke, one of Tiger’s former mistresses spoke to The New York Post about his well-being.

“I saw the news, I only feel compassion for the guy. I think he’s a good person, and it’s kind of sad,” Cori Rist explained to the publication.

Adding: “I think he’s a good person, and clearly he’s a good father, and he’s going through a difficult time, and I think people should offer support instead of applauding his downfall.”
