Woody Allen, a man who has been accused of sexually assaulting his adopted daughter and married his ex-wife’s adopted child, has said he’s “sad” for Harvey Weinstein and fears for a world where man can’t wink at women in the workplace.

“The whole Harvey Weinstein thing is very sad for everybody involved,” Allen told the BBC.

“Tragic for the poor women that were involved, sad for Harvey that his life is so messed up. There’s no winners in that. It’s just very, very sad and tragic for those poor women that had to go through that.”

“You don’t want it to lead to a witch hunt atmosphere, a Salem atmosphere, where every guy in an office who winks at a woman is suddenly having to call a lawyer to defend himself,” he said.

“That’s not right either. But sure, you hope that something like this could be transformed into a benefit for people rather than just a sad or tragic situation.”

An interesting analogy, given that witch hunts were the result of mass hysteria which led to the deaths of innocent women blamed for any misfortune, whereas Weinstein is being accused of decades of abuse and power play over countless vulnerable women.

Another unlikely, but at the same time ridiculously predictable in its irony, person has joined the fray to condemn Weinstein – Donald Trump Jr.

That’s right. The man who defended his father’s claims he could just grab a woman by their vagina and kiss them because he was rich as “locker-room banter” has joined the discussion.

Days after the tape was leaked, three women came forward to accuse Trump of sexual harassment. When the Times report about their claims was published, Trump Jr. Told a radio station, “I’ve never heard anything dumber in my life.”

Despite working with Weinstein on multiple films, Allen claims he never heard about Weinstein’s reputation or allegations against him.

“No one ever came to me or told me horror stories with any real seriousness,” Allen said.

“And they wouldn’t, because you are not interested in it. You are interested in making your movie. But you do hear a million fanciful rumours all the time. And some turn out to be true and some — many — are just stories about this actress, or that actor.”

Interesting.
