Music legend David Bowie has passed away at the age of 69, after a secret 18-month cancer battle.

‘David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer,’ read a statement released via the singer’s social media accounts on Monday.

‘While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.’

The Let’s Dance singer had a celebrated career which spanned four decades and he released his 25th album, Blackstar, on January 8, his birthday.

Kanye West is just one of music’s heavyweights who have paid tribute to the glam rocker.

‘David Bowie was one of my most important inspirations, so fearless, so creative, he gave us magic for a lifetime,’ Kanye tweeted, adding: ‘I pray for his friends and family.’

His son Duncan Jones, 44, confirmed the sad news after fans refused to believe earlier reports, telling Twitter followers: ‘Very sorry and sad to say it’s true. I’ll be offline for a while. Love to all.’

David is survived by his wife, supermodel Iman, whom he married in 1992, Duncan, his son from his first marriage to Angie Bowie, and a daughter, Alexandria, 15, whom he shares with Iman.
