Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman have confirmed they have separated after nearly four years of marriage.

After rumours emerged of the split, the duo announced the breakup in a joint statement to People magazine on April 2.

‘Sadly our family is separating legally, although we do not feel this takes away from us being a family, the statement said. ‘Divorce might make one feel like a failure, but eventually you start to find grace in the idea that life goes on. Our children are our universe, and we look forward to living the rest of our lives with them as the first priority.’ The couple share two daughters together –Olive, three, and Frankie, 23 months.

The announcement comes just days after Drew, 41, posted a photo of her new tattoo –her daughters’ names on her wrist – to Instagram.

The inking was thought to be a tell-tale sign of her marriage ending, as Drew had announced shortly after the birth of their first child that she would be undergoing tattoo removal.

After converting to Kopelman’s Jewish faith, she said the tatts would have to go because otherwise she could not be buried in his family’s traditional burial plot.

Drew and Will, 38, are said to be finalising the divorce later this year.

This is Drew’s third failed marriage. She was married to bar owner Jeremy Thomas for just weeks in 1994, and comedian Tom Green filed for divorce months after they got hitched in July, 2001.
