Zayn Malik recently opened up about how his struggle with crippling anxiety over the past couple of months. In a statement posted to Twitter, the singer shared the magnitude of his illness after cancelling an appearance.

‘Unfortunately my anxiety that has haunted me throughout the last few months around live performances has gotten the better of me … with the magnitude of the event, I have suffered the worst anxiety of my career,’ he explained.

‘I know those who suffer anxiety will understand and I hope those who don’t can empathise with my situation.’

But at least the 23-year-old star needn’t worry about whether he has the support of his on/off girlfriend, model Gigi Hadid.

A friend revealed to E! News, ‘Zayn has opened up to Gigi about his anxiety the past few weeks. [They] have been through a lot these past few months, but they are really trying to communicate better going forward.’

‘Zayn loves his fans and never wants to disappoint them. Gigi has been by Zayn’s side the past week and has been really understanding to him and his feelings,’ adds the pal.

The 21-year-old blonde beauty even showed her support by sending a heartfelt message to her man in response to his initial tweet.

‘Z – I’ve seen the battles you go through and the way you fight to get to a place that allows you to get up there for your fans,’ she began. ‘Your bravery in those times makes me proud, but your honesty last night proved what you’re all about, being real. Human recognizes human. You made the best of the situation and have given your fans an opportunity to understand you better as a performer.’

‘Those who can find compassion now are the ones that deserve to watch you continue to grow,’ she continued. ‘We are all here to support you and make each experience easier. Your talent and good heart will never lead you wrong. Love you and so proud of you always 🙂 xG.’
