Jessica Marais has opened up on her struggles with motherhood. The 31-year-old is mum to four-year-old daughter Scout with ex-partner James Stewart.

‘I used to feel a bit of shame in saying I wasn’t coping,’ the upcoming star of new TV series The Wrong Girl has revealed. ‘But it really does take a village to raise a child and I think it’s good for kids to have people around who they trust who aren’t’ just mum and dad.’

Jess’s comments come after James, 40, revealed that he’s Scout’s primary carer. ‘I am the full-time carer for Scout as Jess is busy working and travelling a lot,’ he said last month. ‘When Jess is back, Scout is shared 50/50.’

The revelation is said to have left Jess reeling. ‘She was completely blindsided and hurt by James’s comments,’ tells a pal.

Despite the difficulties in her personal life, Jess’s career is flourishing – and she says she’s doing the best she can when it comes to juggling work with motherhood. ‘There are advantages and disadvantages to being a working mum,’ she tells. ‘It’s a struggle, but I think being a stay-at-home mum could be a struggle in other ways.’
