One of this year’s The Bachelor stars, Keira Maguire, broke down last night while speaking to The Project about her upbringing.

Earlier this week it was reported in Woman’s Day that Keira had been raised for the first five years of her life in a polygamist cult led by her father, ex-policeman Alistah Laishkochav. The Seaside Sect founder had nine ‘wives’ and 63 children, but Keira’s mother removed her from the situation when she was five years old.

‘I didn’t know who my mum was until I was five,’ admitted Keira to host Carrie Bickmore. ‘It sounds strange, but it just is what it is.’

‘I didn’t even have birthdays. I think I had my first birthday when I was seven. For other people, it might be really sad. But it’s not, because it’s my story.’

Keira, 30, revealed she felt a responsibility to let people know ‘they cannot be defined by anything that is out of your control.’

‘I remember just being five years old going, “Nup, you’ve got this. You control your future.” I feel like, yes, it has affected the way that I think and the way that I am, but only for good reasons.’
