Michelle Bridges recently appeared on Australian Story as it tracked her journey from a broken home in Newcastle, to a multi-million dollar fitness empire and baby with The Biggest Loser co-star Steve ‘Commando’ Willis.

In the segment, she opened up about her family life, her relationship with The Commando and her pregnancy with their son, Axel, all while determined to take down the junk food industry.

On falling in love with The Commando:

‘For a long time, making season after season of The Biggest Loser, we were just friends. It was more of a communication connection that drew us together in that sense rather than anything physical,’

‘[Steve] and I came together at a time when we were both kind of raw and thinking ‘Wow, what is happening with our relationships?’

Michelle split with her husband after he says she chose ‘business over the relationship, and Steve’s ex-wife still believes she was blindsided by their relationship.

On becoming a mother at 44:

‘[Motherhood] is the best thing I’ve ever done and I’ve done a lot. It absolutely felt right. For the first time in my 44 years, it felt absolutely right.’

Steve also added that ‘Axel coming into this world has definitely brought out another side of Michelle.’

On her childhood in Newcastle:

‘I was born and bred in Newcastle, we were definitely a working class family… [and] my parents divorced when I was 4, so I was definitely raised by my mum. There was not a lot of money around, and we ended up moving around a lot.’

On her time on The Biggest Loser:

Michelle’s friends have said she was desperate to be on the show since watching it air in 2005.

‘It might be seen that I have this agenda on people who are overweight or people who are deemed fat,’

‘Honestly, if you are happy where you are, more power to you. But I can tell you, I’m yet to meet someone who is morbidly obese and happy.’

On Australia’s obesity crisis:

Michelle admitted she wanted to tackle the junk food industry in the same way the tobacco industry was targeted.

“The truth of the matter is they sell crap food and make people sick,”

“I’d like to get out there and start fighting the fight for others who can’t fight it.”
