Nicole Richie is making her return to television with a role on NBC’s upcoming sitcom Great News.

The reality TV alum will be making her scripted comedy debut as a series regular on the show written by 30 Rock writer Tracey Wigfield and executive produced by Tina Fey.

The 34-year-old has been cast as Portia, the hip young co-host of a cable news network show. Sometimes described as a shrewd social media genius and other times a clueless idiot, Nicole’s character takes little interest in her older co-host’s (played by John Michael Higgins) vision for a hard-hitting traditional news program.

This will be Nicole’s first foray into scripted TV, with The Simple Life, as well as her recent VH1 show Candidly Nicole, falling in the reality show category.

The next sitcom star, perhaps?
