Ryan “Fitzy” Fitzgerald and Michael “Wippa” Wipfli have been making Aussie listeners laugh every morning since they hit the air waves together back in 2011.

And the beloved radio duo have credited their similar senses of humour for keeping their friendship and professional relationship rock solid over the past decade.

While Fitzy and Wippa acknowledge they’re very different people, they have admitted their Nova FM breakfast radio show wouldn’t be as successful if they had too much in common.

“Yes we’re very different but we both love the ridiculous and have a very similar sense of humour,” Wippa told The Daily Telegraph.

“So once one starts, the other one’s encouraged and I think that’s kind of the connection that happens once you work with someone for so long. You can start to see where they’re going and what angle they’re going to take.”

Fitzy, who became a household name after his stint on Big Brother back in 2004, revealed he was initially hesitant about being paired up with Wippa for the show.

“One of the hardest things in this industry is finding a show that just connects. And a lot of people say, why don’t you do a show with your best friend?” he said.

“You can’t do a show with your best mate because when you’re in each other’s pocket all the time, you don’t have that same chemistry as you do when you’re catching up down the pub for a beer.”

Fitzy said that when Tommy Ivey, the show’s executive producer, came on board in the studio the whole team “just clicked, really deeply”.

The 44-year-old admitted he and Wippa have had their disagreements outside of the show over the years, but said when the mics go on they always have a great time on air together.

“We’ve never really shown any cracks or strains in that relationship,” Fitzy said.

Fitzy and his wife Belinda Irons moved to Sydney from their native Adelaide for Nova’s Drive afternoon show in 2011, before he was moved onto the morning time slot.

Despite the hilarious duo having hosted more than 2000 shows together over the years, they admitted they’re shocked to have lasted this long.

“No, I thought it had 18 months in it to be honest,” Wippa told news.com.au earlier this month.

Surprised but grateful for their success, the pair said they don’t have any plans to give up their coveted gig.

“We’re under contract for a while but we’re loving it. It’s still fun,” Wippa said.
