Unexpected, albeit stylish.

As another year draws to a close, it’s part and parcel to look back retrospectively at some of the moments that made us sit up and take notice.

2020 was full of those.

In fact, so unexpected, so full of twists and turns it was, that even the steadiest, predictable folk among us were knocked for six.

The British royals were right there with us.

In an unprecedented series of historic royal firsts, we watched as the British Firm adapted and improvised new ways to connect with Commonwealth countries.

Zoom calls became the norm, living rooms became offices and socially distant engagements were scattered in between.

But while the royals were subject to what felt like a million new routines, one thing didn’t change – Duchess Catherine’s on point outfits.

For years we’ve watched the British royal become a fashion icon in her own right with her dreamy array of dresses, enviable bouncy blowdry and a penchant for nailing a skirt suit.

And while this year threw too many curveballs to count at the British royal, she’s managed to hook, line and sinker another year of glorious outfits.

Keep scrolling as we round up her best looks from 2020.

January

Kicking off the year in style, Kate gave us a taster of what was to come with this perfectly put together winter outfit. As she attended a church service at Sandringham, she wore a maroon-toned wool coat by Roksanda Denton, along with heeled Stuart Weitzman Boots and topped off (quite literally) with a navy blue fedora by Hicks and Brown Suffolk.

BAFTA

She followed it up with a real hum-dinger – this glorious Alexander McQueen dress worn during her red carpet appearance at the BAFTA Awards in London that was all about promoting sustainability. The Duchess first donned the glamorous frock in 2012.

Vampires Wife

While visiting Ireland at the beginning of the year, Kate wore a dreamy array of dresses – one of the standouts was this shimmery Vampires Wife dress. So chic!

She certainly had the strut of the Irish! Kate wore another green frock during a busy day of engagements during the royal tour. This time, it was all about the spots.

Ghost dress

A special mention must go to this glorious Ghost dress Kate wore while she and her family took part in the Clap For Carers initiative back in April.

Lockdown

During the first lockdown, Kate wore an array of gorgeous at-home outfits. This Altuzarra spotty dress was all the more apt given it came in NHS’s trademark blue colour. A subtle show of support.

June

June brought us 2020’s GOAT, our number one pick of the year – this gorgeous floral puff sleeve dress of dreams by Faithfull the Brand. She wore it while mucking in at a community garden in Norwich.

Tennis

While Wimbledon was out this past summer, there was still no reason why one couldn’t celebrate it. Duchess Catherine appeared in a special Zoom call with Andy Murray wearing a very quirky shirt dress featuring… tiny little tennis players!

And we certainly can’t forget this polka dot Emilia Wickstead number she wore for a special BBC collaboration in July.

August

In August, Kate stepped out to visit Baby Basic UK & Baby Basics Sheffield in this crisp white shirt dress, complete with her signature floral face mask. Heavenly.

October 2

On a visit to the University of Derby, Kate beat the chilly weather in this gorgeous Massimo Dutti coat. Given the October timing, we despairingly lamented the idea of wearing beautiful woolen coats as the weather heated up Down Under.

And then there was the black blazer. Oh yes, one of Kate’s most heavenly event ensembles came in the form of this satin-lapelled-product-of-pure-GLORY. The event in question was at London’s Natural History Museum.

Hold Still

In November, Kate released a series of videos to discuss her Hold Still photography competition. As soon as this video appeared on our screens, you can bet we were enchanted, enthralled, obsessed with this bright red blazer.

Christmas

In one of her final looks of the year, the Duchess opted to wear this glorious Alessandra Rich dress, an older season style which had clearly been sitting in her wardrobe waiting for its moment. We’re glad she chose this night to debut it.
