It’s been a year since Zayn Malik, 23, left One Direction fans broken-hearted by walking out on the band. But now the brooding hunk is back and has a solid bad-boy image to match, although this was not always the case.

Speaking to Complex magazine, the singer opened up about his time in 1D and the rules they had to follow, especially in regard to ‘the way that we could come outside of that young teen boy look’.

The biggest issue he had was in relation to grooming. ‘Mainly my beard, honestly. I wasn’t allowed to keep it. Eventually, when I got older, I rebelled against it, and decided to keep it anyway.’

‘I also wanted to dye my hair when I was in the band, but I wasn’t allowed to,’ he adds.

The Pillowtalk singer has since dyed his hair a variety of colours since leaving the group. So far we’ve seen pink, blue, green, white-blonde and silver-frosted tips.

‘It was about denying the authenticity of who I was, and what I enjoyed about music, and why I got into it,’ he says.

Set to release his solo album on March 25, Zayn has made it no secret that he wasn’t in love with the music his boy band made.

‘That [thought] was always there. It was one of the things that wasn’t going to go away, so I had to go away.’
